Hypertension is the force that blood exerts against the walls of the blood vessels. It's also called high blood pressure.Â Usually, it is defined as blood pressure above 140/90mm/hg.Â
There are 2 types of Hypertension
Primary hypertension- A type of Hypertension that has no known or traceable cause and it makes up for up to 90%of cases. It is majorly due to genetic factors and is largely influenced by lifestyle and environmental factors.
Secondary Hypertension- This is a type that is due to an underlying disease condition like kidney disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases and could be more severe than primary hypertension.
Hypertension Risk Factors
It is a known fact that those with certain habits like smoking, excessive alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyles, are at more risks of developing hypertension.Â In classifying risk factors, some are modifiable, some are not.
Modified risk factors:
These are risks you can do something about and have a level of control. These include smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and the sedentary lifestyle mentioned earlier, and in addition, poor eating habits, stress, high cholesterol, & being over-weight.Â
Non-modified risk factors:
These are those you really can do nothing or very little about.Â
They include a family history of Hypertension, Age, and Ethnic backgrounds (Africans and Asians tend to have hypertension compared to other continents.
Management of Hypertension:
Studies have shown that Hypertension is not a curable disease, however, it's a disease that must be well managed to prevent further and more life-threatening disease conditions and even death.
Both Pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches are employed in the management of Hypertension.
Pharmacological approaches. involves the use of medicines, In the management of Hypertension, Ensure you do not self medicate, ensure you are always in contact with your health care provider before you start taking or change any blood pressure medication of any sort.
If you are having a primary hypertension, there are a range of medications that would be recommended or prescribed for you. Non-pharmacological approaches - involve the use of lifestyle adaptations and changes to help control hypertension which include daily exercise of 30mins per day, reduction of salt intake, increase in potassium diet like banana, physical activity, healthy eating habits. Reduction of caffeine intake, e.t.c.
Exercises have been shown to improve cardio health significantly, while stress has been found to worsen it. Stress and exercise also do not have the same effect on the body.
